Sidewalk Daydream

2003

Cracks quiver against the corner of the mouth

Where some of the drops have collected in puddles.

Salted water spills and drips on a shoelace tip

Next to pancaked gum and tar-laced rubble.

Retrospection leads the minds’ eye regressively and

The daydreams begin to split the sting in his teeth

Surrendering a path of broken calcium.

Diving through a weathered tunnel,

A few teeth get caught

Disheveled cough and a gasp for air is broken.

Butterflies with razorblade wings shred his

Hearts only connection to the worlds ear

And it screams like a piglet drowning

Underneath the fat of its mothers’ last breath.

“Thoughtless thoughtfulness”, that’s what they said it was

But coffins don’t reveal the headstone to their guests

And his pleading travels with the traffic.
